Recycled

I could have sold my old records for so little money I’d have felt stupid going through the effort of having lugged 1000 lbs. of vinyl around to do it.  Or I could have just donated them or thrown them away or kept them in crates in my parents’ basement.  But I was running low on canvases…

Reasons to like NYC

I started a series.  Don’t know how far I’ll go with it, but I can come up with hundreds of reasons to like New York, so I could theoretically take it pretty far.

For now here are two…

Reason number 2 aka “Masked Self Portrait”

Newest Mural

Wow, I just realized I never even blogged about this. So I got a cool gig a couple months back. I was asked to paint the entire Bagel Store, on Bedford and N. 1st in Brooklyn. It was at a time that I was looking to paint larger than I ever had, so the timing couldn’t have been better. I still want to do a few more tweaks to it, which I will when it stops raining, snowing, sleeting and hailing outside! But here it is so far…

When I make any drastic changes or additions to it I’ll let ya know.

Here’s a new piece I finished 2 days ago. 16″ x 20″ spray paint on canvas. It miiiiight be in the DUMBO Arts Festival this weekend, that remains to be seen. At least 1 piece will be, just not sure which one yet. I’ll go over all those deets with the powers that be today sometime. Speaking of which, if you’re around the Brooklyn area this weekend, come to the DUMBO Arts festival. For those of you who maybe don’t know, DUMBO stands for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”. So you know where the festival is. The brooklyn side of the Manhattan bridge. You can’t miss it. It’s on the water, it’s cobblestone and it’s beautiful. There will be a TON of musicians, djs and artists displaying their work and doing their thing. It’s definitely the thing to be doing this weekend. And although I’m just one tiny artist with one tiny painting in a giant festival, I’m very proud to have been asked to be part of it. It’s a big deal to me. Oh, if you ARE coming, take the F train to York Street. Then follow the crowds of people. You can’t miss it.

Relatively Settled

It’s been a while. I have been spending more time out experiencing my new city of New York than sitting home blogging about it. Time to balance it out a bit.

For those of you who don’t know, I moved to NYC May 2nd. I actually road tripped across the country from California on April 1st. Stayed with friends in Long Island while I found a place to live, then officially moved into an artist loft in Brooklyn on May 2nd. From then until now I’ve been going everywhere, meeting new people, trying out different restaurants, seeing live music, and of course working.

There are 15 bedrooms on my floor. It’s quite a large floor though. There are two kitchens, 3 bathrooms, community dining areas and hang out spaces, a patio which isn’t built yet and an art gallery which also isn’t built yet. Almost all of us get along fabulously. I’ll post some pics of that eventually.

Meanwhile, here’s the first of my Brooklyn series. Vinny and Pablo are two of my new roommates. They are lovely. Vinny is a painter and quite a well-known model, Pablo is a musician and well-known writer in Spain. More to come.

Love, Erica XO

What My Show Actually Looks Like

I finally made it down to the Whittier Law Library to take photos of the actual display.  It looks really different with the display tiles than just the original paintings, so I thought you might like to see it.  Or not.  Either way, I’m SHOWING you!  XO Erica

This is “Where the History Comes From” with the display tile I made to go behind it.  Whoever can guess correctly why I named it that will win something COOL!!!  *Disclaimer:  You can’t be someone who I already told.

This one is called “Pretense” and it was sold opening night.

For some stupid reason, this window isn’t letting me type above this painting only below it.  So ok…this one is called “Walking Away” it has acrylics, nail polish, ink, and spray paint all over it.  Fun!!!  Ok more to come… XO Erica

Art Show Update

Thank you all sooo much for coming to my art show last night and showing your support. I had a wonderful time and hopefully you all did too. I got very positive feedback from a lot of people and I found the whole experience very encouraging and satisfying.

This is only my second solo show, and the first one that I sold a painting opening night. So that makes me happy. Here’s a pic of the one that sold:

Thanks again! XO Erica

For Banksy

Here’s a new painting that’s going into my show. I’ve dedicated it to Banksy, an amazing artist, a man who has no idea how much he has inspired me, and creator of the best manifesto in the history of ever. He reminds us that we aren’t asked by the media whether or not we’d like their message shoved down our throat in public, so it’s completely within our rights to communicate OUR message publicly. You’re right, man, forgiveness IS easier to get than permission. <3
